IN HAMMANA, A HISTORICAL SCHOOL
In 1895, the first home of the Good Shepherd Sisters was built in High Metn, at 30 Km from Beirut. At the time, the High Metn was a region devastated by successive wars. To set an example of tolerance, reconciliation, and multi-confessional coexistence, the sisters decided to settle there. Its unique mixture of Christians, Druze, and Muslims is somehow representative of Lebanon on a smaller scale. Undermined by the civil war, this now-fragile harmony required social and educational support, a cause to which Good Shepherd School contributed. Their presence during the difficult times of war encouraged villagers not to abandon their community and villages.
